Case Study: Rebuilding After Disaster
When a devastating house fire displaced this local family, Weninger Construction was there to guide them through every step of the rebuild process.

Losing your home and personal belongings is overwhelming enough — but in this case, the restoration process became even more complex when asbestos was discovered during demolition and cleanup. The property required full asbestos remediation before reconstruction could even begin.
For homeowners facing a fire loss in the Okanagan Valley, navigating insurance claims, demolition, remediation, permits, and rebuilding timelines can feel impossible. Our role was to bring clarity, organization, and peace of mind during a difficult time.
As an experienced custom home builder in the Okanagan, we worked closely with the homeowners and their insurance provider to maximize the approved rebuild budget while creating opportunities to improve the functionality and comfort of the home.

Using the existing footprint of the townhouse, we redesigned the layout to better suit the family’s lifestyle. Relocating the kitchen allowed us to create a larger open-concept galley layout that completely transformed the main living space. What was once a cramped, single-person kitchen became a warm and functional gathering space for the entire family.

One thing homeowners should know after a fire or flood loss is this: you are not required to use your insurance company’s preferred contractor. You have the right to choose your own builder. We came in to complete this rebuild after the initial disaster remediation was complete. The insurance company’s suggested timeline was 12 months. We were able to expediate this repair, and even with revised layout, Weninger Construction was able to shorten the timeline significantly, under 5 months from signed contract to occupancy permit!
At Weninger Construction, we regularly work with insurance companies throughout Kelowna, West Kelowna, Lake Country, Vernon, and across the Okanagan Valley. Our team understands the documentation, invoicing structure, and communication required to keep insurance claims moving efficiently and transparently.
We also helped this family take advantage of the rebuild process by incorporating meaningful upgrades that improved long-term comfort, energy efficiency, and resale value. Spray foam insulation was added to improve air sealing and meet current BC building code standards, while new windows and doors created a tighter building envelope and a more comfortable living environment year-round.
As a full-service custom builder, we coordinated every aspect of the rebuild through to finishing details and final occupancy. Managing trades, schedules, inspections, and communication on behalf of the homeowner helped reduce stress during an already emotional situation.

Our in-house design team at Cobalt Design also worked closely with the homeowners to guide selections for cabinetry, flooring, countertops, fixtures, and finishes. Every recommendation balanced style, functionality, and budget.
Throughout the rebuild, the homeowners were kept informed of pricing and upgrade options, allowing them to make decisions about where to invest their insurance money and where they wanted to add in extras. Our online project management system kept selections organized and timelines on track.
Beyond construction, Cobalt Design also assisted with the substantial task of furnishing and replacing household contents — helping the family recover faster and making the transition back into their home significantly less stressful.
The finished result was more than just a rebuilt house. It became a safer, more functional, and more beautiful home designed around the family’s needs.
Today, more than five years later, the homeowners still love their personalized rebuilt home.
Projects like this are why we do what we do. Restoring a home after a fire is about far more than construction — it’s about helping families rebuild comfort, stability, and a sense of home again.
